A sensational batting breakdown added to Ireland's five-run misfortune to the United Arab Emirates in their second Twenty20 global.
The hosts made 133-7 in their innings in Abu Dhabi, with Boyd Rankin taking 3-17 and Max Sorensen 2-16.
An opening stand of 61 between William Porterfield (72) and Paul Stirling (28) place Ireland in control and they showed up on course for triumph at 91-1.
Eight wickets succumbed to 37 keeps running as the UAE retaliated for Sunday's 34-run rout.
SP Patil top-scored for the UAE with 31 off 37 balls, while Mohammad Shahzad crushed 22 keeps running off 16 and opener Rohan Mustafa contributed 20.
Porterfield and Stirling found the limit consistently as they hit 61 off only 42 balls, before Stirling tumbled to Amjad Javed.
Poynter's rejection for 10, with the score at 91, flagged the start of Ireland's death as wickets fell at normal interims from there on.
Commander Porterfield shows others how its done
For captain Porterfield, it was his third half-century in T20 internationals, and his 72 off 60 balls included eight fours and a six.
However with 13 required off 11 balls, he was run out by wicketkeeper Swapnil Patil.
Nine were required off the last over, yet Max Sorensen was run out off the main ball, and George Dockrell played from the second.
That left Rankin and Tim Murtagh at the wrinkle, and the pair oversaw only a mixed bye and a solitary as the hosts finished a great rebound win.
Mohammad Naveed, Ahmed Raza and Mohammad Shahzad gathered two wickets each.
The match was a piece of Ireland's planning for their World Twenty20 crusade, which begins against Oman in the Indian city of Dharamsala on 9 March.
The squad will now have a week's break before making a trip to Chandigarh for a preparation camp before a warm-up amusement against Hong Kong on 3 March.
